Procedural Training at UC

At UC, we extend evidence-based practices to resident education. We use adult learning theory to shape our curriculum and teach our residents. Procedural training in our residency program uses an evidence-based approach to obtain and sustain competence throughout residency. Below you will find links to the evidence behind our procedural training as well as pages dedicated to each procedure. These pages include educational materials as well as procedure checklists used for assessment.

So what does this look like for residents? A resident will have the ability to perform paracentesis unsupervised and could supervise/assess others if the following criteria are met:

  1. Resident performs paracenteses with direct observation and assessment using a MedHub evaluation. Once the resident has completed 5 paracenteses and scored an entrustment level of indirect supervision, the resident is certified to perform/supervise the procedure.

  2. Every three months, the resident is required to perform one additional evaluated paracentesis to maintain certification.

We have also developed a new procedural curriculum under the direction of Dr. Alex Garbarino. In the new curriculum, residents are provided with resources (articles, videos, etc.) to review prior to a simulation session. At the simulation session, instructors provide a brief didactic and demonstrate the procedure. The residents are able to practice the procedure with the instructors, to prepare to perform the procedure on patients. They then complete the procedure on patients with supervision, and the supervisor evaluates the resident on MedHub. Once the resident completes 5 of the same procedure with a score above the minimum requirement for unsupervised practice, the resident is certified to perform the procedure and supervise others. They will need to log a procedure or re-certify in the simulation lab every 3 months.

Ultrasound Locations

  • UCMC - Can check out US from MSD or MICU, but please check with the MICU Fellow/Attending or MSD Senior/Attending to make sure they do not need it in the time it takes to do your Procedure
    • Both units have a checkout binder, write down your name, time checked out, room number and procedure being done. Clean the machine and check it back into the unit it came from when finished
  • VAMC - US and Butterfly are stored in Hospitalist office on 7th floor. Check with your attending during the day or if needed urgently overnight use the whiteboard keys.

Procedure Pages

Interested in brushing up on your skills?? On the 3rd Wednesday afternoon of each month residents can schedule a 30 minute time slot to practice a procedure (Thora/Para/Arterial line/Central line) in the VA Sim lab. This session can be recorded for recertification and to provide you feedback.

  • Email Dr. Garbarino (garbarar@ucmail.uc.edu) and Dr. Goueli (misoor.goueli2@va.gov) with the procedure you want to practice for available time slots.
