Diwali - Dr. Rinki Goswami will be hosting a Diwali party with Bean and Barley (2005 Madison Rd.) on October 22nd at 7PM!

The Fall GI Interest Group will be meeting with Dr. Schoch and is being planned now. Flu Vaccine - All UCP and UC Health employees are required to receive a flu vaccine by Friday, November 11. Please review the following dates/locations that residents can get their flu vaccination. Don’t forget to enter your vaccination in Readyset.

Wednesday, Nov. 29 a.m.–1 p.m., Across from Starbucks

VA Transfusions - Don’t forget to get consent before transfusing blood products through I-Med when you are at the VA. If you are having issues, you can do a paper consent. If done on paper make sure to place it in patient chart and document it in CPRS!

VA Access - The VA is working hard to fix some of our access issues. Please remember to remotely log on to CPRS once per month. This resets the clock, keeping your CPRS access active! There are instructions on the silver fridge and if you need a card reader, we can get you one!

Can we just briefly reflect how cool it is that we are actively seeing science in motion? It's tough to keep up because the entire world is learning new things about this virus together! You may have heard (or maybe not...) that there is a new COVID-19 booster available. How is the new COVID vaccine different, and who needs it?

There are two bivalent vaccines available (Pfizer vs Modera, a tale as old as time). Bivalent means that it targets the original SARS-CoV-2 strain and BA.4/BA.5, which are the variants in the community that escape the immune response of the original vaccines. This bivalent booster serves to reverse waning immunity and improve the breadth of protection from COVID-19. While most of the clinical data for bivalent vaccines is for BA.1 and BA.2 variants (analogous to changing seasonal flu vaccine), mouse models demonstrate improved neutralizing antibody response to BA.5 variants with the new bivalent vaccines. The side effects are largely similar to monovalent COVID vaccines. The CDC recommends a booster dose with one of the bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines for EVERYONE ≥12 years old (Pfizer for ages 12-17, Pfizer or Moderna for ages >18) who has completed a primary COVID-19 vaccine series at least two months after their last vaccine dose. That includes YOU. Hopefully this brief scoop blog was helpful (at least until the guidelines change next week).
