ABC - ABC has started for our new PGY2s! Long blockers - help us to welcome them to Hoxworth!

Gym Access at the VA?! We may now be able to gain access to the VA Gym! (Yes, there is a gym at the VA - I didn’t know that either!) If you are interested - please reach out to our VA Chief, Drew Kelleher!

Dragon Software at the VA!? It may be possible for a few select residents to start testing the use of Dragon at the VA. Right now, Dragons will be first come first serve. If they are in high demand, we might be able to get more! Interested? Talk to Drew!

FYI - ophthalmologic and dental treatment room - there will be a new procedure room on campus for both ophthalmologic and dental procedures/care located on the 2nd floor in between the elevators and CVR, room Room 2249A. AOD’s beware of this new room if there is a rapid/code there are limited resources there (no oxygen, suction, etc).

VA work room access - Resident work rooms on 6th and 9th floors now have secured access, you can either use the PIN - 52020# or resident badges should work for entry (students will likely have to use PIN #). If badges aren't working, please contact Nicole Lindsey (nicole.lindsey@va.gov).

Tuesday: What is the number to call a rapid response?

Thursday: You are called that a 52 year old male admitted with pneumothorax s/p chest tube is experiencing worsening shortness of breath. You order a STAT CXR and call the Xray tech on your way to the patients bedside. What should you do once you arrive at bedside?

Friday: When might you consider plasma exchange in a patient with acute pancreatitis secondary to hypertriglyceridemia?

Education Takeaway A’s

Tuesday: To call a rapid response, call 513-584-3333. Save this number in your phone! You can also ask someone around you to call a rapid if you are actively evaluating a patient or you can call the operator at 513-584-1000.

Thursday: Other than completing a pertinent history and physical — don’t forget to look at the chest tube! Is it in? Is there an air leak? Is it kinked? Great information to have before calling your friendly pulmonology fellow.

Friday: You might consider plasma exchange if triglycerides are >1000, lipase is > 3x upper limit of normal and the patient has worrisome features. If you are contemplating if your patient needs plasma exchange - chat with the MICU team!
