Book Club - We are kicking off our residency book club! We typically meet quarterly for a great night of food and conversation - but first, we have to choose a book! If you are interested, you can click here to submit a few book recommendations of any genre. The only requirement is that they must be less than 400 pages (..for busy residents).

Consult Noon Report Series - We are kicking off another one of our noon report series this week at UC! For the next few weeks we will be having a fellow or attending from our wonderful consulting services give a noon report on common consults, review which consults are emergent and what information we should have prepared before we call them! This series will begin this Tuesday with a noon report given by one of our orthopedic colleagues.

Gym Access & Dragon Software at the VA?! We may now be able to gain access to the VA Gym. It may also be possible for a few select residents to start testing the use of Dragon at the VA. If you are interested in either of these - please reach out to our VA Chief, Drew Kelleher!

VA work room access - Resident work rooms on 6th and 9th floors now have secured access, you can either use the PIN - 52020# or resident badges should work for entry (students will likely have to use PIN #). If badges aren't working, please contact Nicole Lindsey (nicole.lindsey@va.gov).

Education Takeaway A’s

Monday: In distributive shock (neurogenic, anaphylaxis, sepsis) you will have significant vasodilation = decreased SVR with subsequent increase in cardiac output. In cardiogenic shock - you have a significant decrease in cardiac output so your vessels clamp down (increased SVR).

Tuesday: Use smartphrase .hfdc to address all TJC and AHA metrics, NYHA, Reason for hospitalization, Procedures performed/treatments/services during admission, All discharge medications (including PTA medications must include dosage and indication for use) and follow up plans.

Thursday: Acidosis: pH<7.1, Electrolytes: K>6.5 or rapidly rising Ingestions: toxic alcohols, salicylate, Overload: Volume overload refractory to diuretics, Uremia: Specifically, uremic complications such as pericarditis or uremic encephalopathy

Friday: 1.Increased risk of falls, 2. Increased risk of mortality
