R38-funded Research Opportunity - We are now accepting applications for the UC StaRR program that is funded by the R38 grant from the NIH.  The program involves formal coursework, mentoring teams, individual development plans and an additional year of protected research time with support.  If accepted, you will complete the usual long block with the addition of a more structured research program that will include formal coursework in Clinical and Translational Research Fundamentals.  Depending upon your experience and needs, this might result in a certificate or a degree.  After long block, you will enter into a year long research experience.  This will extend your residency by one year.  At the completion of the year long research experience, you will complete the remaining 8 months of clinical training.

The goal is to have a structured program that will enable residents to become physician scientists that are competitive for and committed to academic fellowships.

The application consists of a “Statement of Purpose” and a CV.  There is no experience required and you do not have to have a research project in mind or a mentor identified when applying.  The statement of purpose should detail why you would like to participate in the program, your career goals and how this program will help you attain these goals.  It should be less than one page.

Deadline is Aug 31, 2021.  Application materials should be emailed to Daniel.schauer@uc.edu.  Selections will be made by September 30, 2021.

Interested in GI? - Dr. Don Schoch, one of the gastroenterology faculty members, has helped organize meetings with internal medicine residents for a number of years to provide a forum for discussion about gastroenterology as a field and to  help residents prepare for applying to GI fellowships. In addition, the meetings have included discussions with fellows and current residents about the application process. This has allowed residents to learn from others about the process of applying. If you are interested in participating, please complete the survey below. We will then let the responding residents know about the date and time of the first meeting. They are usually held in the early evening at a nearby restaurant. Sign up for the GI interest group here.

Whiteness and white racialized identity refer to the way that white people, their customs, culture, and beliefs operate as the standard by which all other groups are compared. “Being white does not mean you haven’t experienced hardships or oppression. Being white does mean you have not faced hardships or oppression based on the color of your skin.”

“White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack,” written by Peggy McIntosh provides some examples of what white privilege looks like in day to day living:

• I can if I wish arrange to be in the company of people of my race most of the time.

• I can avoid spending time with people whom I was trained to mistrust and who have learned to mistrust my kind or me.

• If I should need to move, I can be pretty sure of renting or purchasing housing in an area which I can afford and in which I would want to live.

• I can be pretty sure that my neighbors in such a location will be neutral or pleasant to me.

• I can go shopping alone most of the time, pretty well assured that I will not be followed or harassed

• I can turn on the television or open to the front page of the paper and see people of my race widely represented.

• When I am told about our national heritage or about "civilization," I am shown that people of my color made it what it is.

• I can be sure that my children will be given curricular materials that testify to the existence of their race.

• If I want to, I can be pretty sure of finding a publisher for this piece on white privilege.

• I can be pretty sure of having my voice heard in a group in which I am the only member of my race.

• I can be casual about whether or not to listen to another person's voice in a group in which s/he is the only member of his/her race

Paddlefest - The nation's largest paddling celebration, returns for its 20th anniversary, with a shorter 4.5-mile paddle as well as a bigger Friday night opening party. Aug. 6-7. Second Sunday on Main - This event will kick off Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Main and Orchard streets. Attendees should bring their fanciest umbrella and join in the parade.
